Anti - Bias Policy

Policies And Procedures
8.         ANTI-BIAS
AIM
To introduce an anti-bias program within our centre that demonstrates an active approach to challenging prejudice and stereotyping as it can occur in our society.
To offer an inclusive approach for integrating diversity into our program.
To promote an environment where children realise their full potential regardless of gender, age, socio-economic background, physical and intellectual ability, differing family structure and culture.
To treat all children with equal respect and provide equal opportunities for all children.
TO FOSTER:
a)                  Each child’s construction of a knowledgeable, confident self-identity.  This involves liking who you are without needing to feel superior to anyone else because of who you are.  It also means the development of a multi-cultural identity where that is appropriate.
b)                  Each child’s comfortable interaction with diversity among people.  This means having the cognitive, emotional and behavioural skills to respectfully and effectively ask and learn about differences, comfortably negotiate and adapt to differences cognitively appreciate the common humanity all people share through their differences.
c)                  Each child’s critical thinking about bias.  This means having the cognitive skills to identify unfair and untrue images (stereotypes) comments (teasing, name-calling), and behaviours (discrimination) directed at ones own or other’s identity and having the emotional empathy to know that bias hurts.
d)                  Each child’s ability to stand up for themselves and for others in the face of bias.  This means helping each child learn and practice a variety of ways to speak up when bias occurs, either for themselves or for others.
That diversity enriches our lives and our culture.  It provides us with the opportunity to learn and benefit from the experiences of people from diverse backgrounds.  We recognise that each of us is unique and precious.  That for children to develop to their full potential they need to acquire:
            a)         An expanded awareness of others.
            b)         A greater capacity to communicate.
            c)         An increased willingness and ability to co-operate.
            d)         A growing sense of social responsibility.
            e)         A high level of personal confidence and self- esteem.

8.1       CENTRE PHILOSOPHY
Edgeworth Child Care Centre endeavours to provide a caring, educational environment to all children, respecting their individuality.  It recognises the differences amongst children and acknowledges each child’s right to develop fully as an individual and to be treated on the basis of equality.
8.2       PROGRAMMING
Both individual and group programs will reflect the centre’s stated philosophy and goals.  To this end it is understood that:
a)                  Each worker undertakes to implement a cross-cultural, anti-bias perspective to the curriculum, and plans accordingly.
b)                  The physical environment of our centre and its programs (including objectives, focus and direction, incidental learning opportunities and group activities) reflect a commitment to this perspective.
c)                  The program is recorded, so that parents and visiting groups can become aware of its objectives and implementation.  It is regularly assessed and evaluated against its objectives.
d)                  The program is developmentally based and relevant to children’s life experiences, interests and social skills.
8.3     STAFF
Strive towards an awareness of the way we treat individual children - in regards to language, attitudes, assumptions and expectations.
Seek an awareness of our own feelings, beliefs and background and the effect these may have on attitudes and interactions with both children and other staff members.
Reflect positive role models.
Utilise community resources including the families and staff at our centre and materials and incorporate them into the program.
Strive towards an awareness in relation to the values and beliefs held by differing cultural groups and their effect on child rearing practices.
 8.4      FAMILIES
Edgeworth Child Care Centre will provide access and equity for all families.
Families will be encouraged to contribute knowledge and resources from their own culture and to participate in the running of our centre.
The menu will reflect the cultural diversity of all children at the centre, including children with special dietary requirements, allergies, etc.
