5.      COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
 

AIM
To promote community awareness and understanding of quality children’s services.
To promote community involvement in child care by providing places at Edgeworth Child Care Centre for students from secondary and tertiary levels.
5.1      Students in the Centre
 

The following guide-lines must be adhered to in the centre:
a)         The centre is expected to formulate a list of responsibilities and duties for any students involved in the centre. These must be read by the students prior to entering play areas.
b)         For students involved in the centre for an extended period, ie. more than one (1) day, the centre will provide the students with the  following:
i)          A list of centre policies which are relevant to the student’s work within the centre. A copy is to be signed by the student, indicating their knowledge of, and undertaking to abide by, the policies.
ii)         A Disclosure of Information Statement (see Form POLAA1.2) signed by the student.
Students must read and sign both these forms before entering the playrooms.
c)         i)          In a centre with one (1) Early Childhood trained teacher, only
one (1) student, either an Early Childhood student teacher or a student of a TAFE college studying an approved Early Childhood course, should be on placement at one time.
                       
ii)         In a centre with two (2) Early Childhood trained teachers,  two (2)students, either Early Childhood student teachers and/or students of a TAFE college studying an approved Early Childhood course, may be on placement, but each one is to be placed with an Early Childhood trained teacher.
d)         Parents are to be informed of any students in the centre via a notice on the parent notice board.
e)         The acceptance of any students is totally up to the discretion of the Director (Authorised Supervisor).
f)          The Director (Authorised Supervisor) is to request a list of the institutes/colleges/schools’ expectations of the students’ visit prior to the commencement of the visit.
 
g)         Any conflict with students arising within the centre must be reported to their supervising teachers immediately.
h)         No student is to be given the responsibility for supervision of children in the absence of centre staff.
i)          Prior to presentation, any programming carried out in the centre by a student should be checked for suitability by the Director (Authorised Supervisor) or the supervising staff member.
It is suggested that the centre compile a student handout containing information continually requested by students, eg. staff names and qualifications, number of children attending each day, centre routine, hours of operation, management structure, community resources used, etc.

5.2       Volunteers in the Centre
 

The involvement of volunteers in the centre is to be encouraged where appropriate.  The centre is to formulate guide-lines for volunteers in the centre. These guide-lines are to include the following:
a)         Selection and inclusion of volunteers in the centre is up to the discretion of the Director (Authorised Supervisor).
b)         Any person wishing to work in a voluntary capacity will be required to show proof of identity as well as providing two (2) referees who may be contacted by the Director (Authorised Supervisor).
c)         No volunteer is to be given the responsibility for supervision of children in the absence of centre staff.
            d)         A list of responsibilities.
e)         A list of centre policies which are relevant to the volunteer’s work within the centre. A copy is to be signed by the volunteer indicating their knowledge of, and an undertaking  to abide by, the
                        policies.
f)          A Disclosure of Information Statement (see Form POLAA1.2) signed by the volunteer.

5.3    Media Statements
Any request by the media for information on the centre must be referred to the President of the Parent Management Committee.

5.4       Community Activities
Edgeworth Child Care Centre encourages involvement in any community activities which assist in the promotion of quality children’s services, eg. Children’s Week, providing such involvement is not to the detriment of the children attending the centre.
The decision to become involved in community activities is to be made by the  Director (Authorised Supervisor) in consultation with the Parent Management Committee.
